Western Wolves Victorious in EMS IX

The eagerly awaited EMS Season IX final between Anexis Esports and Western Wolves has resulted in a surprisingly comfortable win for the former LLL side.

Western Wolves went into the match straight off the back of a lineup change, having switched out Adam Mumma Timle Händel for fellow swede and ex-TCM teammate Hampus mySn Karlsson after it became apparent Mumma could commit as much time to team as he would like.

Anexis, still considered by most to be the most dominant force in the game, came into the game having comfortably won all their matches thus far, and hoping to add a few more thousands to their already impressive haul of prize money. A sizeable portion of this cash was won in the final of the Corsair Vengeance Cup, where Anexis overcame LLL 2-1 in a close contest to take home $6,000.

While considerably less money was on the line here, the occasion still carried a great deal of importance. WW are the team that have come the closest to knocking Anexis off their pedestal, and this would be the perfect chance to do so. Anexis, on the other hand, were keen to hold on to their spot as undisputed kings of CoD4, and see off those pesky lupines once and for all.

Despite the tension and build up going into the game, what emerged the other side of the 41 rounds played was a bizarrely one-sided affair. Anexis were constantly on the backfoot, not able to get into their groove and form a cohesive resistance to their opponents' onslaught. After 2 maps the game was done and dusted, with WW taking crash 13-07 and crossfire 13-08.

What we can make of this is unclear. Could this be the first crack in the armour of the Hungarian giants? The turning point of nearly a year of unbridled domination? Or is this just a slight hiccup in the ongoing tirade of destruction Anexis have reaped upon the CoD4 scene?

Only time will tell, but for now WW can sit comfortable having bagged themselves a tidy €1,250. Anexis take the second prize of €750, while the third prize is still up for grabs as Germany delicious have yet to play Netherlands Antwerp Aces in the third place playoff.

Congratulations to WW.

Anexis were probably tired of not knowing the taste of defeat. They needed to be humbled.
